Up until 1858 the probate process for people from Colne was handled by the Probate Court of the Archdiocese of Chester, and the surving wills and other probate documents can be seen at Lancashire Archives. An online index to all wills proved in the Diocese of Chester, 1545 – 1730s, is available here. For the period 1730s to 1858 we currently rely on the various printed indexes produced by the Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire which can be consulted at Lancashire Archives and some Lancashire Libraries. Digital copies of these volumes can also be seen online.
